Dr Rimi Shah
FRCP MBBS Dip GUM DFRSH
I was appointed as a Consultant in Genitourinary medicine and HIV at the Royal Free Hospital and Barnet Hospital in 2005, having trained in GUM/ HIV medicine at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals and qualified from the Royal Free medical school.
My clinical practice includes screening and management of sexually transmitted infections e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital warts, thrush/ bacterial vaginosis (BV) and herpes; as well as, complex GUM related problems e.g. recurrent discharge, erectile dysfunction, prostatitis/NSU and vulvodynia/ vestibulitis; and general HIV management.
I am currently Lead Clinician for HIV (Barnet site) and Head of services for the dept for 6 years.
My specialist interests are in Women’s health, particularly in the management of recurrent vaginal infections, such as chronic thrush and BV; and, in the antenatal care of women with blood bourne viruses/STIs, including HIV.
I am actively involved in evolving and improving sexual health services in the community, and increasing GPs’ awareness of management and prevention of STIs and HIV, through education.
Through education to my peers, and what I like to think of as a friendly and approachable manner with all – I am enthusiastic and passionate about normalizing infections/conditions `down below’ and making their management as painless as possible. I provide a sympathetic and pro-active approach to, an often difficult problem for women with chronic discharge.
Out of work, I am equally passionate about skiing, running, rock climbing and cooking/ experimenting with food from around the world, as a keen `foodie’. I am also a slow but enthusiastic learner of Italian conversation.
I am happy to see private patients when they need to be seen including evenings and weekends and am able to offer a culturally sensitive service for female patients.
